Daily Nautica interviewed Werner Perl, sailing manager for Dynamic Nord, during the World Yachting Summit in Monaco
Sustainability was one of the central topics during the World Yachting Summit in Monaco. Discussing the topic were a number of expert guests and industry innovators like Werner Perl, sailing manager for Dynamic Nord. The German brand, which manufactures equipment for water sports, wants to change the way we think about sustainability. Daily Nautica, media partners for the event, were able to further discuss this innovative vision during an interview.
Werner Perl spoke about the need to not just concentrate on carbon footprints, i.e. Carbon emissions. His company philosophy is to look for new solutions to protect the oceans. For this reason, Dynamic Nord have come up with three different ways, regarding materials, recycling systems and product engineering.
Dynamic Nord’s philosophy
“Now – explained Werner Perl to Daily Nautica – we need to talk not only about our carbon footprint, but also about what materials can be used to pollute as little as possible. According to our company, there are three ways we can take. The first, for fabrics, consists in using as much natural fibre as possible, which means creating polyamide fibres not from petroleum, but biologically. In addition to this, we have created a recycling system for technical clothing, a ‘cradle to cradle’ system, which means using recycled polyester to create our products so that, at the end of their life cycle, they can be recycled in turn. The third way is to break the rules of traditional engineering.”
Sustainability in amateur sports
“ We have – notes Werner Perl – partners in water sports who are thinking in a completely new way about sustainability. An example is ship construction, where glass and laminate fibres are used, while our partners are thinking of using a flexible natural fibre to create this lamination. It is a new idea that can already be applied to small boats, like the Optimist class.”
